As a photographer, my motto is "shoot for yourself first". This means taking photos of things you enjoy , photograph what pleases you first. Whether its portraits, nature, architecture, sunsets - photograph what pleases you. If other people like your work, all the better. If someone wants to buy your photographs - even better! Learn the technical stuff, know your camera, don't be intimidated by Photoshop. But the pleasure in photography comes from being in the moment and taking photos, and seeing something in your viewfinder that catches your eye, and capturing it!
